Exercise and Low Carb Diets: An Oldy But Goody

Many of us understand the importance of eating right and exercise. I get a lot of questions relating to exercise and eating less carbs. The reason is because it is popular belief that carbohydrate foods are “the most important” source of energy for athletes.
I do believe that body builders and a few others may feel otherwise and I myself tend to agree. Maintaining a balance of eating enough healthy carbs (and minimizing excess carbohydrates) so that you burn fat (the fat you want to lose), instead of burning carbohydrates first will actually give you an advantage when you are active. I talk about this in my book, “The Stubborn Fat Fix”, http://www.amazon.com/Stubborn-Fat-Fix-Metabolic-Exercise/dp/159486828X.
For those of you who cannot commit much more than 30-45 minutes of time to your daily exercise routine, a low carb diet will have you burning fat right from the get-go. If your body is burning carbohydrate, it takes 30-45 minutes for your body to shift from burning carbs to burning fat. Yep, I’ll say it again. You get a full fat burning work-out the minute you start exercise when following a low carb diet. If you choose a high-carb, low-fat diet, it takes a minimum of 30 minutes of exercise to burn through all the excess carbs you’ve eaten. If you continue exercising for longer amounts of time, you’ll slowly start burning more fat. The more time you have to exercise, the more fat you’ll burn.
I do not know about you but, I’d like to get the most work-out bang for my efforts as possible. Anyone want research? Let me know, ‘cause it’s out there. I often wonder why no one talks about it.
Well, I guess I shouldn’t say, “no one”. Here is a remarkable interview by Shelly Shindler, producer for the, “How On Earth Show” on KGNU community radio station in Denver (1390 AM) and Boulder (88.5 FM), Colorado. It also streams on the web, http://hoe.kgnu.net/index.php.
In February of 2006, yes it’s awhile ago but the information is ageless, Ms. Shindler hosted her “How On Earth, Show”/em>: Exercise and Low Carb Diets with Steven Phinney, Eric Westman and Jay Wortman. Three outstanding researchers who explain in a very interesting way how low carb diets provide a better source of fuel for your body than high carb diets for those who exercise, http://hoe.kgnu.net/hoeradioshow.php?show_id=184.
Go ahead listen, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. Afterwards, I’d love to get your feedback on this one. It is a very interesting topic for discussion to say the least.
